GAS FIRES DIRECT UK - GAS FIRES FAQs

Buying a new gas fire is an important purchase and we want to make sure you make the best decision. We are eager to help, so if you have any specific enquiries that are not answered by visiting this website please email us or telephone us - we will be delighted to assist you!

There are basically five different categories of gas fires and it may simplify your selection if you first decide on the type of fire you require and then click though the different manufacturers to see what they have available in that category. Your existing flue type may also dictate which of the models, in a particular category, would be compatible. Fires are as much pieces of furniture as they are heaters and customers will be influenced by a number of factors as well as how well they heat the room: appearance - looks are tremendously important; the fire is often the focal point of a whole room

 Does it look right
Heating - is it the only heater in the room?
Is it to complement a central heating system?
Does it need to supply any real heat at all?
Price - what is available at the price you want to pay?

To meet the special requirements of our customers we have a wide range of fires. Whatever style and whatever design, the heat they provide will either be radiant heat or convected heat - or a combination of both.

What type of fire can I have?
The chimney or flue you have usually dictates your choice of gas fire.

Who will install?
Your fire has to be installed by a CORGI registered engineer/company

I love living flame fires but I have difficulty kneeling down to turn it on.
There are several models of fire available that feature easy-to-reach controls. For example, the most popular living flame gas fires have a slide control that is easily accessible on the side. You don't have to bend or kneel to turn the fire on and off or to alter the settings. Alternatively, there is an optional hand held ultrasonic remote control available on some models.

Tell me about Inset gas fires?
These appliances are usually fully recessed into a fire opening to simulate a real coal fire with living flames. They require a natural draft flue or chimney. Inset gas fires can provide either radiant or convected heat, some may provide a combination of both. Radiant heat is concentrated immediately in front of the appliance just like a real, open, coal fire would be. Convected heat distributes warmth around the room to provide a more even heat. There are some inset gas fires with glass fronts which are more efficient. Some models are suitable only for a given flue type, this will where possible, be stated in the appliance specifications

What if I don't have gas?
No problem. There are gas fires that can be easily adapted to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), a bottled gas, which is just as effective as natural gas.

I haven't got a chimney. Can I still have a gas fire?
Balanced Flue Gas Fires don't need a chimney or flue: as long as you've got a suitable outside wall and a gas supply, you're away, a small hole in an external wall takes care of the flue. These fires are glass fronted and can sit on the hearth or be inset, but if you want the beauty of an open-fronted fire, then choose a Fan Flued Gas Fire, a complete system which can be inset into the wall or in a surround. It's that easy! If there is no direct access to an outside wall you can still have a side fan flued fire.
